The New York Metro Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers began its 58th year in September 2010. The chapter year runs through June 2011 with technical presentations at meetings and events to reinforce our commitment to:

  • Promote the advancement of the science of Fire Protection Engineering
  • Promote the advancement of the practice of Fire Protection Engineering, in accordance with the New York State Education Law.
  • Maintain a high ethical standard, and general camaraderie, amongst our members,
  • Foster Fire Protection Engineering education, including CEU credits for NY State Licensed Professional Engineers.


Our monthly chapter meetings are generally held in the Gural Room at the NYU Graduate School at 11 West 42nd Street in New York City. The Gural Room on the 4th floor overlooks the beautiful Bryant Park as well as the  New York Public Library. 

January 11, 2011:          At the January 11, 2011 joint meeting with the Fire Safety Directors’ Association, SFPE Metro NY Chapter President Zygmunt Staszewski presents a $2,500 check to the FDNY Chief of Fire Prevention Thomas Jensen.

March 29, 2011:             March 29, 2011Field trip to the Notifier factory in Connecticut.  We will be taking the 8:07 AM Metro North train from Grand Central Station to New Haven, where Notifier will pick us up.  We will return on the 2:33 PM train, coming back to Grand Central Station at 4:12 PM.

April 26, 2011:

We will conclude our chapter year with a joint NY/NJ SFPE Golf outing that is being scheduled for June 2011.   All proceeds from the golf outing will be, as always, deposited into the James R. O'Neil/W. Robert Powers Memorial Joint Scholarship Fund, which is given to local students of fire protection engineering who are enrolled in bachelors or masters programs at approved universities.
